Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling

Practical answers about online counselling in Surrey and across British Columbia. If your question isn't here, you're welcome to ask.

Do you offer counselling in Surrey?

Yes. Counselling is offered online to clients in Surrey, including Newton, Whalley, Guildford, Fleetwood, Cloverdale and South Surrey, as well as throughout British Columbia. There is no in-person office; all sessions take place by secure video or phone.

Do you offer online counselling across BC?

Yes, subject to professional and service requirements. Clients in Surrey, Vancouver, Burnaby, Delta, Langley, Richmond, Abbotsford and other BC communities can access online sessions.

What languages do you offer counselling in?

Counselling is available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri, with the ability to communicate with clients in their preferred language where appropriate. Many clients move between two languages during a session, and that is welcome.

Do you provide couples counselling?

Yes. Couples counselling focuses on communication, recurring conflict, trust, emotional connection and rebuilding a healthier relationship. Both partners join the same online session, and where it fits the couple the work can draw on Gottman-informed tools.

Do you provide family counselling?

Yes. Family counselling can involve parents, adult children or other family members, and often focuses on communication, boundaries, parenting challenges and intergenerational differences — including differences that come with living between cultures.

What issues can counselling help with?

Common reasons people reach out include anxiety and stress, depression and low mood, trauma, grief and loss, relationship and couple concerns, family and intergenerational conflict, anger and emotional regulation, self-esteem and identity, cultural adjustment, and workplace or life transitions. Counselling does not guarantee a specific outcome, and it is not a substitute for medical care.

What happens during the first counselling session?

The first session focuses on understanding your concerns, your goals, relevant history and context, and whether the counselling relationship feels like a good fit. You set the pace, and you can ask questions about how counselling works before deciding to continue.

Do I need to know exactly what is wrong before starting counselling?

No. Many people begin without being able to name what they are feeling. Part of the work is putting words to it together. You don't need the right words before reaching out.

Is online counselling private?

Sessions are conducted using appropriate secure technology, and professional confidentiality applies with the usual legal and ethical limits. It also helps to join from a private space where you are not likely to be overheard — some clients use a closed room, a car, or headphones.

Does insurance cover counselling?

Coverage varies between plans. Please check your specific extended health benefits and whether services provided by a Registered Clinical Social Worker are covered under your plan. Your provider can confirm this before you begin.
